Gorthaganny

Errit Lodge

Errit Lodge is a jewel in the crown for this area and without a doubt the most popular and utilised facilities. Long known as a popular bathing and fishing retreat, the development of the amenity in 2011 brought it well into modern standards with a new car park and boat house.

In more recent times, the lodge has been upgraded with a lakeshore and forested walking trail which has had a great reception by members and neighbours of the community.

In the 19th century, Erritt Lodge was one of the West of Ireland’s most popular sporting Lodges often frequented by the local Landed classes and gentry of times past. The Lodge, Caher House and most of land in the Gorthaganny district were part of the vast De Freyne estate(French Family). The French family of nearby Frenchpark House were a prominent family in the development and administration of Roscommon in the 18th and 19th centuries. Fitzstephen French of Erritt Lodge was one of the most charismatic and active politicians in Ireland in the 19th century. He is recorded to have assisted in developing and promoting the sporting lodge at Errit Lake which was nationally recorded.
